| KANARY came together in 1996 playing their own special
brand of original rock & roll - strong lyrics, awesome vocals and a
killer rhythm section make this band unique. They have released three independent
CDs, "Invincible," "Porno Church of the Ugly Man," and most recently "Haunted"
their most powerful recording yet.
BIOGRAPHY If you're under the impression that the lyrics from your favorite folk chick or fluffy girl-group typify what girls really think about, you're in for a rude awakening...get ready for KANARY, a powerful southern California trio made up of Leslie Knauer on Vocals & Guitar, Mary Kay on Bass, and Tony Matteucci on Drums. With lyrics most aptly described as EXPOSED, it's like surreptitiously spying into your girlfriend's most private diary, with songs about things most of us are too embarrassed to even discuss in public, while at the same time being humorous and wildly addictive! Leslie's got a seductive, self-assured 'rock-goddess' voice that rivals any of her peers. She leads us through emotion after emotion, with topics covering elation, loneliness, rivalry, great sex, bad sex, spirituality, jealousy, lustful desperation and just wanting to punch that annoying roommate in the kisser. We identify. And we can't help but be relieved that there is someone else obsessing about such things...we are not alone. This band has an impressive authenticity, as if they could equally reproduce their records at The Forum, or in your living room...they're the real deal. A sturdy foundation of bass and drums from Mary & Tony, complimenting Leslie's more whimsical guitar work. Leslie often opts for the oddest, coolest operatic vocal passages rather than the typical middle-eight guitar solo! Wild, weird, cool, original, and strictly Kanary! Live, KANARY has the darling quality of making you feel like you are a part of their crazy, happy little private party. Leslie & Mary are completely adorable, flirting and laughing on stage, with tie-dye hair and wild outfits, while Tony seriously cracks out his masterful drumming, occasionally shooting adoring smiles to his cheeky compatriots. KANARY's first independently released CD, "INVINCIBLE" is now entering its fourth domestic pressing and has also been released by Universal Music/Tricycle Entertainment in Japan, an impressive feat in our current musical climate! The first cut from that album, "I Can't Even Think About Getting Married" was featured on Volume One of the compilation CD released by the Los Angeles Women in Music last year, while another solid stand-out, "Do You Swear" is included on our "Music of Times Square Productions" 2 CD compilation set for film & television. The release of KANARY's second CD, "PORNO CHURCH OF THE UGLY MAN", pressed in numbers 300% of the original in anticipation of growing demand, coincided with their performance at the 3rd Annual EAT'M Convention in Las Vegas last month. The EAT'M event (Emerging Artists and Talent & Music) showcases the finest unsigned talent in America & abroad. With their newest effort, "PORNO CHURCH OF THE UGLY MAN", it's easy to hear their growth as a unit. Mary debuted her songwriting talents with "Hullabaloo House" and "Lost Weekend" which are spun directly from Mary's life, and like Leslie's songs, expose the dysfunctionalities and eccentricities of typical American life with irony & humor. "PORNO CHURCH OF THE UGLY MAN" boasts several solid standouts in the "HIT" category. Pay special attention to the heartbreaking "Praying", the inspiration of "Two Steps" and "Never Coming Down", and the brutal lucidity of "After". The lyrical content of each of these songs combined with great hooks, melodies and solid musicianship come together to create an album of the highest caliber.
