American Cancer Society
"Relay For Life" - 8/26/2000
West Hollywood Park, CA.

Andrew Scott, a traditional piper treated us to beautiful music as the candles were lit around the track at the start of the Luminary Ceremony.
Thousands of candles were sponsored, each bearing the name of a cancer survivor or as a memorial to loved ones.  They lined the track where participants in the relay walked for 24 hours straight to raise funds to fight cancer.

The lovely and eloquent Valerie Harper was one of many who delivered a moving heartfelt speech of encouragement and hope for the future.

Cherie and her band of  "All-Stars" ready themselves to take the stage to perform Cherie's original composition "Believe", an inspirational song that epitomizes the strength and spirit of the participants in this event, and all those working to find a cure.  (left to right - Guitarist Lanny Cordola, Bassist Chuck Wright, Cherie, Drummer Russ McKinnon, Keyboardist Jon Greathouse, and Guitarist Alex Grecco...but where's Julie?)

Here's Julie! Cherie and the phenomenal Julie Ragins who sings that kick-ass middle section in "Believe".
Many friends came down to participate and cheer Cherie on!  Pictured here are Marie Currie, Katt Lowe, Sandy West, & Cherie.  But we also had the pleasure of making a buncha new friends and greeting our buds Rick & Beth & Bobi & Cindy & Diane & Michael & Pam & Kelly & Mara & Chuck & Linda & Paul & Victoria & Renee & so many more!
Cherie Currie, Russ McKinnon, Sandy West, & Katt Lowe
Here they're just getting started, Cherie is greeting the audience as the stage begins to fill with her six band mates and the 30 members of the  Inglewood Faithful Central Bible Church Choir.
By the time everyone is up there, you can barely fit a guitar player in edgewise!

It was simply MAGIC watching the choir master conduct his vocal orchestra!
Listening to Cherie belt it out backed by that amazing choir and fabulous band,
it was like the sky opened up friends, it was awesome!!!

Julie kickin' out her solo with the choir in the mid section of the song. Wooohooo!

Lanny & Alex delighted the audience with marvelous and moving guitar
solos.  The entire band and choir performed with such incredible
precision and soulfulness, it was awe inspiring!  I'm weeping at this moment. ;-)
This is me - Nigel, I organized the Luminaria and it was truly lovely.  There were numerous speakers and fab musicians who contributed their talents, their time, and their funds, for which I am immensely grateful.
Linda Bergman, a fellow survivor, organized and brought this entire event to life. I closed the ceremony with a speech that brought many sniffles from the audience.
Here's a shot of Cherie & her band: Russ, Jon, Chuck, Julie, Cherie, Alex & Lanny, after their brilliant performance and on their way home at around 11:00 PM.

Other particpants would be continuing their marathon until 9:00 AM the following morning.

We've all lost friends and/or family members to cancer. If you'd like to help fund a cure by contributing to the American Cancer Society you may contact them here: http://www.cancer.org/
